Retirement Journey At age 58, I decided to retire after working 32+ years in computer technology, all in the Bay Area, CA. I am sharing my retirement decision journey and some experiences from the last two years of post-retirement life. You have to look for answers yourself. The 3 BIG Questions I Needed to Answer (for Retirement Decision): Why should I retire or not retire? Do I have the financial capability to retire? How will I spend my time? Early last year, while sitting in a café in downtown Los Altos with a fellow hiker, I mentioned that I was planning a trip to Iceland. He immediately said, "If you're going, you must hike the Laugavegur Trail." That simple suggestion planted a seed. Soon, I convinced my neighbor and hiking partner, Ramesh, to join me, and we planned a ten-day Iceland adventure. Duration: 6 days Distance: ~70 miles (113 km) Highest Point: Fimmvörðuháls Pass (~1,000 m / 3,280 ft) Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous Best Time: July–August Highlights: Rhyolite mountains, glaciers, lava fields, volcanoes, river crossings, waterfalls Iceland is a land shaped by two powerful forces—fire and ice. Sitting atop the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, it is one of the world's most volcanically active countries while also home to Europe's largest glacier....

I had already planned hikes for 2025, with some downtime to welcome our first granddaughter, so 2026 seemed like the perfect year. A yatra is a pilgrimage. We are all pilgrims, spiritual beings on a human journey. Beyond the hiking, I felt a separate urge to go to Kailash, and I wanted to go in memory of my mother. I floated the idea with a few close friends, and most of them signed up. I needed at least 10 people. After due diligence, we chose the Om Namah Sivaya (ONS) group. News spread, and the team grew to 20. We decided to travel via Tibet to see the Potala Palace and other monasteries. Half the team planned the three-day parikrama around Kailash, while the others would visit Mansarovar and do some shorter hikes. We would start on September 14, 2026, from Kathmandu. The WhatsApp group buzzed with questions and information. Tickets were booked, Chinese visas obtained. All s...
