MLK Day

There is no a better day to start the blog journey for 2017 than MLK (Martin Luther King) Day.  The last few months have been tumultuous with the new election and it feels the "Promise Land" is still far... it feels uncomfortable... but we have to keep moving...

Today, read few pages from a book on Gandhi, MLK or Mandela. The civil right struggle is not over ... it is as relevant as  before...

I was part of Big Brother and Sister organization (a while back and I became a big brother to two African-American kids (25+ years ago) - they. Tim and JJ were 8 years and 10 years old. This was my first close interaction with the African-American community and it was a surreal experience - the challenges Mom and kids faced (from an abusive relationship) - it was eye opener since I came from a stable and well to do family from India - these circumstances were remote for me.

This was before I got married and so had plenty of time to take the kids to the park, movie, help on math homework or even catch some frogs in the creek. The family moved to a new town after a year and then it became hard for me to keep in touch. After few phone calls ... we slowly drifted in our own paths.

Those two boys are adults  now! Tim and JJ ... keep at it! The beacons of light from Gandhi, MLK and Mandela will guide all of us ...

I am still struggling to find an answer...

Enjoy the MLK Day!
